Board breaking marathon to benefit Sycamore family
SYCAMORE – Bill Cho’s United Tae Kwon Do Center, 1598 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore, will host a break-a-thon fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, to help the Neppl family with their medical bills.
Tyler Neppl, 8, of Sycamore was diagnosed as an infant with neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic disorder that causes rapid tumor growth. The disorder affects about one in every 3,000 children, and has no cure.
Tyler currently has several tumors, on his eyes, leg and brain. He is scheduled to begin a trial drug this fall in an effort to shrink or slow the tumors. The treatment, which will last a year, is expected to cause such side effects as depression, difficulty concentrating and a general feeling of being unwell.
Despite Tyler’s difficulties, he is an energetic and upbeat child. The fundraiser will help his family defray medical costs. Participants are invited to learn to break boards and to break as many as they like, at $2 per board. There will also be pizza and raffles. For more information, call 815-895-2008.
Donations can also be made to the Tyler Neppl Fund at National Bank and Trust locations.
