DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Women’s Center galleries will feature “Experiences in India,” a show of art by Danielle Dobies and Lynn Hill, in November.
An opening reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8. The exhibit can be viewed from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 8, 15 and 22, or by appointment.
Call 815-758-1351 or email email@example.com for information or to make an appointment to view the exhibit.
“After visiting educational and spiritual sites in southern India, Ajanta, Ellora and New Delhi, I designed a large mosaic mural,” Dobies said. “The women I met told stories of the complexity of life in India. This mural illustrates the contemporaneous achievements and social evils surrounding women in India.”
After eight trips to India, Hill said she struggles to reconcile the opportunities available to her with the restrictions on women in India.
“My trips have been organized to focus on particular challenges and some of the initiatives working to mitigate those hardships,” she said. “As an artist, my response has included documentary photograph series, video interviews, and participatory projects.”
Dobies is a master of fine arts candidate at Northern Illinois University. Hill is the chair of the art department and an associate professor of art at Elmhurst College.
The DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St. in DeKalb, is four blocks north of Lincoln Highway, between 10th and 11th Streets. Parking is half a block south on 11th Street. An accessible lift may be reached from the north alley adjacent to the building. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
