Published: Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 9:36 a.m. CDT

The 23rd annual Snug Hugs for Kids clothing drive at Merlin’s Auto Care Centers kicks off Monday, Oct. 28, and continues through Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Items most needed are new and like-new coats, boots, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves, and sweaters sized to fit children who are newborn to 18 years old. Donations benefit more than 40,000 children in Illinois served by Children’s Home + Aid.

Volunteers are needed for two programs that are conducted in conjunction with the clothing drive.

People who crochet or knit can participate in the Crochet & Knit-a-Thon, handcrafting mittens, hats, scarves, sweaters, slippers, afghans, baby blankets and layette sets. Volunteers can register online at merlins.com/snughugs.

A celebratory knit-a-thon event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Aurora; participants who cannot attend the event can drop off finished items at any Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop in Illinois or Wisconsin or can ship them to Merlin’s corporate office at 3815 E. Main St., Suite D, St. Charles, IL 60174.

Girl Scout, Boy Scout, school and youth groups can earn a collectible embroidered badge when they register, collect children’s winter clothing, and donate it at any Merlin 200,000 Miles Shop in Illinois or Wisconsin. Preregistration is not required, and groups may submit a KHK Registration & Badge Request Form after they have completed the donation. Visit merlins.com/snughugs for more information.

Merlin franchisees, employees, and corporate staff will deliver the clothing to Children’s Home + Aid program centers on Wednesday, Dec. 18.
