Harlem Wizards visit schools for pep rallies
GENOA – When funding cuts were made to athletic programs at Genoa-Kingston High School last year, the Genoa Athletic Boosters began brainstorming ways to make up some of the deficit.
Due to decreased state funding, District 424 cut $30,000 from this year’s athletics budget, according to boosters club member Mollie Hughes.
“We wondered, what could be fun and get the community all together to raise money and make up for some of these cuts?” she said.
The idea was to bring the Harlem Wizards, a traveling stunt basketball team in the tradition of the Harlem Globetrotters, to Genoa. The team will take on a team of current and former G-K athletes and prominent members of the community in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3.
The boosters’ team is called We Are One, Hughes said.
Four of the Wizards visited Genoa schools on Oct. 2 for mini pep rallies to get students excited about the November game, Hughes said. In assemblies at each school, they shared basketball tricks and a positive message. The athletes are positive role models of hard work, discipline and a healthy lifestyle, Hughes said.
The Nov. 3 game will combine basketball with stunts, comedy and a lot of audience participation. The game will be at Genoa-Kingston High School. Tickets for adults are $12 in advance; tickets for students and seniors are $10 in advance. Advance tickets can be bought at Genoa schools, Tobinson’s Ace Hardware, Resource Bank Genoa, Cafe 72 and Kingston Village Hall. Tickets will also be available at the door for $2 more. Courtside Plus tickets are $25 and include reserved seating and a meet-and-greet session with the Wizards.
