Abstract photography on display in October

DeKALB – Local photographer Jim Dester will show original composite and abstract color digital photographs from Oct. 5 through Nov. 8 at The Art Box, 308 E. Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb. An opening reception is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6.

Photography has been Dester’s passion for more than 50 years, and the thrill of seeing and creating a beautiful image still gives him great satisfaction. From traditional film photography, his work evolved through the new technology of digital media. He has created abstract images by using one or more of the following processes:  digital photography, digital painting programs, HDR and digital scanners. Dester’s ability to photograph floral subject matter is impeccable, then he uses computer programs to enhance the backgrounds by superimposing another image. His final images are unusual, surreal and very colorful; the interpretation, however, is left up to the beholder. From observation he depicts relationships between the cosmos and a singular botanical specimen, order versus chaos, the forces of nature and the results thereof.

Two of Dester’s compositions have won special recognition awards from the Light, Space & Time Online Art Gallery in the “Abstracts” art competition. Two others have been accepted in the “Artists Gone Wild” exhibition hosted by The Next Picture Show in Dixon.

Born and raised on a farm in Oklahoma, Dester earned a degree in industrial technology from Northern Illinois University. He worked for 30 years in the printing and manufacturing of business forms. He is a sitting board member of the Kishwaukee Valley Art League.
