DeKALB – DeKalb County Community Gardens is partnering with the Welcome Cafe & Community Kitchen for the final Local Flavors Harvest Dinner of the 2013 growing season. The dinner will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. in DeKalb. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance. Children 12 and younger eat for free.

The meal features locally-raised vegetables, poultry and meat. There will be both meat and vegetarian options.

Gretchen Sigwart will play her harp, and local musicians Heath Johnson, Jessie Brown and Jenny Lupa will entertain. There will be a tasting of wines from Prairie State Winery of Genoa and Sycamore, and a raffle of wines from the Waterman Winery.

Proceeds from the event will be split between DeKalb County Community Gardens and Welcome Cafe & Community Kitchen.

Welcome Cafe periodically offers free Saturday morning brunches and provides an incubator kitchen for small, locally-owned businesses with sustainable practices. It also offers education, job training and job-search assistance.

Now in its second year, DeKalb County Community Gardens has raised and donated more than 5 tons of food to local food pantries and nonprofit agencies that provide meal service. There are more than 40 garden sites over nearly 10 acres in DeKalb, Sycamore, Cortland and Genoa.

Local flavors dinners raise awareness about healthy food choices found close to home. For information or reservations, call Dan Kenney at 815-793-0950 or email dkenney53@hotmail.com.
