History exhibit follows one family’s immigrant experience
DeKALB – The fall exhibit at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center, 1021 State St. in DeKalb, touches on genealogy, local history, immigration and America’s “metling pot.”
“A Memorial Tribute to the Pesut Family: Croatian Immigrant Experience in Finn Town, DeKalb, IL,” will be on display through Friday, Oct. 25. It can be viewed from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays or by appointment; call 815-758-1351 for an appointment.
Frances “Peppy” Pesut, who grew up in Finn Town at the east end of DeKalb, died in 2013 at the age of 95. She was the last of seven children of Croatian immigrants who married in America and first rented, then owned their own house. In her elder years, Pesut moved from the homestead and bought her own house “two steps from church” – only the third address of her entire life.
