DeKALB – Some were there to meet Huskie athletes, but Teresa Harris and her 4-year-old son, Pierce, just wanted to see a movie.
“We just moved to DeKalb,” Harris said as the pair relaxed on a blanket near the 30-yard line of Huskie Stadium. “We’re big movie fans.”
A large crowd attended Movie Night at Huskie Stadium at Northern Illinois University Sept. 11. NIU media director Donna Turner said the night was the official debut of the new HD scoreboard, ribbon boards and audio system installed at the stadium last summer. Besides highlights of last season, the main feature was “Wreck-It Ralph.”
At 15.5-by-39.5 feet, the new scoreboard is nearly double the width and slightly taller than the old scoreboard, Turner said. It uses a newer LED technology to create a sharper, more detailed picture.
Before the movie, fans got autographs from the college’s student-athletes, including members of the football team.
“It’s a good family event,” said Jodi Heitkamp, who works at NIU and attended with her husband and two small children. “It’s a good chance to meet the athletes. We see them on TV, and now we get to meet them in person.”
Season ticket holders Katie and Jennifer Yochem set up near the 50-yard line with their families.
“The kids love coming here and playing on the field,” Katie Yochem said, adding that the movie is probably the kids’ favorite. “They’ve seen it about 15 times.”
The Huskies’ first home football game is at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host Eastern Illinois University in the first of five home games.
