Local foods as an economic tool discussed in webinar

SYCAMORE – University of Illinois Extension presents Growing Our Economy, a three-part webinar, this fall. The parts of the webinar will be offered from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 13, Oct. 11 and Nov. 15 and can be viewed at the extension office, 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore, or online from your personal computer. The program will also be recorded and archived for viewing at a later date.

Part one, Local Foods as an Economic Development Tool, will explore local food systems and how they contribute to the community, both in economic development and community development. Presenters will provide information about Illinois law and food safety.

Part two, Case Studies in Communities: Local Food Development, will look at examples of successful local food systems, including what local growers frequently need regarding permits and other municipal considerations.

Part three, Illinois Next Steps: Where do we go from here?, will discuss the opportunities and challenges for the growth of local food systems in Illinois, how communities can support the development of local agricultural businesses and local food systems.
