Program on local Underground Railroad movement

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 12:09 p.m. CDT

DeKALB – Nancy Beasley will present a presentation called “Encountering Abolitionists” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Little Theatre at DeKalb Area Retirement Center-Oak Crest, 2944 Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb.

The presentation will be part of a meeting of the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society, but it is open to the public. It relates to Beasley’s recent book, “The Underground Railroad in DeKalb County, Illinois,” which concentrates on the antislavery movement in DeKalb County.

Beasley spent 10 years researching the movement, families involved and local churches that assisted abolitionists. The book includes a biographical dictionary of more than 600 local families who risked imprisonment and $5,000 bounties to assist runaway slaves.
