Movie and market keep downtown hopping

GENOA – The area’s largest outdoor market and a free outdoor movie will keep downtown Genoa hopping on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The popular Open Air Market operates from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the intersection of Main and Genoa Streets. Movie fans will converge on the same location at dusk for a showing of “Despicable Me.”  Admission to both events is free.

“Everyone enjoys shopping for fresh produce, housewares, gifts, jewelry, crafts and whatever interesting items the market vendors bring,” said Mim Evans, Genoa Main Street executive director. “This month kids will have a ball playing carnival games, getting their faces painted and making a cool craft project. The carnival is being run by St. Catherine’s Catholic Church of Genoa’s youth group. The kids are raising money for a mission trip to Nashville, Tenn.”

In addition to the kids’ activities and market vendors, lunch is served and downtown merchants plan sidewalk sales.

“We encourage market goers to visit our interesting downtown shops.”  said Evans.  “All market visitors receive a sticker to wear on their shirts. The stickers get visitors special discounts and free offers at downtown businesses.”

The fun resumes at dusk as families stream in carrying lawn chairs and blankets for the free movie. The line for free popcorn forms early. Additional concessions are available for sale. There will be a silent auction of gift baskets of items donated by Dollar General. The baskets were assembled by employees of Jack Godde State Farm Insurance. All proceeds benefit downtown projects and community events.
