Getting to know the farm
SYCAMORE – See what’s growing in local farm fields, get an up-close look at corn and soybean crops, talk to a farmer about how food is grown and bring the entire family for hands-on activities at Farm to Food and You, a new event designed to connect city families to their food. The farm event is planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, in the field at Church and North Grove Roads northwest of Sycamore.
From 3 to 7 p.m., there will be farm activities including learning about how corn and soybeans grow, getting on tractors and other farm equipment, understanding the use of modern technology in agriculture, seeing farm animals, and talking to producers about farm and food production.
“It’s an opportunity for people to visit a farm field and have a hands-on experience with the farmers who grow their food,” said Phil Montgomery, farmer and president of the DeKalb County Corn & Soybean Growers. “I think people will find this event quite unique, informational and an entertaining experience.”
There will be farm-fun activities for kids such as shelling corn, planting soybean seeds, playing beef and pork games, watching a sheep being sheared, milking a recirculating cow and much more.
Also, special exhibits and displays will help city families become better connected to local agriculture.
All activities are free and are open to the general public.
There will be an opportunity to purchase food prepared on-site – choose from a grilled ribeye steak sandwich, a pork burger or lamb bratwurst – plus chips, beverages and ice cream.
Groups contributing to this event include DeKalb County Corn & Soybean Growers, DeKalb-Kane Cattlemen’s Association, DeKalb Area Pork Producers, DeKalb County Lamb & Wool Producers, Kishwaukee Dairy Herd Improvement Association, DeKalb County Farm Bureau, and local FFA chapters.
The farm address is 9525 N. Grove Road in Sycamore. For more information contact Phil Montgomery at 815-751-7560 or email@example.com. Information about this event is also posted on the DeKalb County Farm Bureau website, www.dekalbfarmbureau.org.
The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 25.
