SHABBONA – Local sportsmen rescued 48 large fish at Shabbona Lake on Thursday, July 17.
The fish included 34 muskies ranging from 25 to 47 inches in length; 11 walleye ranging from 15 to 28 inches in length; two striped bass, one 18 inches and one 26 inches; and a 20-inch largemouth bass. They had gone over the lake’s spillway and were trapped in a 200-yard stream below the dam. There is a barrier fence 200 yards downstream from the outflow of the spillway which allows water through, but prevents fish from escaping.
The anglers gathered at the direction of the Quad County Hawg Hunters Muskie Club and the Shabbona Lake Sportsman Club. They made a line across the water and walked downstream with muskie nets. As the fish were caught in the nets, they were taken to a holding tank. When all the fish were caught, they were released back into the lake.
