Police: Illinois gun laws still in effect

Published: Tuesday, June 11, 2013 8:40 a.m. CST

The Illinois State Police, Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association issued a public safety advisory last week in response to numerous inquiries to the Illinois State Police Firearm Services Bureau about whether gun owners can carry concealed firearms.

Concealed carry has not yet passed in Illinois. Current Illinois law prohibits the carrying of an immediately accessible or loaded firearm on your person or in your vehicle regardless of whether it is concealed. Persons in violation are subject to arrest.

On Tuesday, June 4, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals extended the deadline by which a new law must pass to July 9. HB183, which was recently passed by the Legislature, is under review by Gov. Pat Quinn. It has not yet become law.
