GENOA – The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce is upgrading everything: staff, website and now, where it calls home.
In May, the chamber opened its new home at 111 N. Sycamore St., a few blocks away from its old home of 327 W. Main St.
“We decided that, as the chamber was growing, we would look for a new location that would allow us to further expand the chamber,” said Executive Director Kristie Mulso. “Make it more of a welcome center, a visitor center, and make it more accessible to the community.”
The chamber now occupies a house the city of Genoa previously bought and renovated for their public works and economic development departments. Mulso said the house was furnished by chamber members who donated furniture and other amenities.
Mulso said the chamber will have an open house dedicating the new location from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 6.
Mulso said there was nothing wrong with the old location, but the chamber needed more space with its membership growing from 93 to 137 members. The new location also will house the Explore Genoa initiative.
“We’d like to incorporate into all of [the events we host] into our think local, shop local first mission,” Mulso said.
Mulso said there have been many changes; in addition to larger membership, it has a new website and a new logo.
But even with the changes, Mulso still has her eyes on the future.
She said she hopes to get to 140 members in 2013, as well as building stronger ties between the chamber’s members and the community.
“We want the community to understand that our membership and our networking is there to provide products and services for the community,” Mulso said. “Not only to think local, but to think throughout our membership.”
