Local residents honored at North Central
Two DeKalb High School graduates, both seniors at North Central College in Naperville, were honored at the college’s Honors Day on May 14.
Maria Gommel, daughter of Mark and Laurie Gommel of Malta, received the Outstanding Major in Mathematics and the Outstanding Student in Division of Science awards. Gommel is majoring in mathematics and actuarial science.
Gommel was recognized as the 2012 North Central College Lincoln Laureate, an annual award by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois that honors outstanding seniors at four-year degree-granting institutions in Illinois.
As a junior, Gommel became a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, the highest national undergraduate award for achievement in mathematics, science and engineering. That year, she also co-presented research on epidemiology at the 2012 National Conference on Undergraduate Research.
She will graduate a College Scholar and completed an honors thesis titled “Cantor’s Continuum Hypothesis: To Infinity and Beyond.” She also presented her thesis project as an oral presentation during the college’s 2013 Rall Symposium for Undergraduate Research. After graduation, Gommel will begin a Ph.D. program in mathematics at the University of Iowa.
Adam Doden, son of Gary and Lorraine Doden of Cortland, was awarded the Outstanding Major in Exercise Science Award. He is majoring in exercise science with minors in psychology and wellness.
A former U.S. Marine, Doden transferred to North Central to prepare for a career in strength and conditioning. He has accepted a full-time position as facility manager at Players Indoor Sports in Naperville.
Gommel and Doden have regularly appeared on the dean’s list during their student careers.
