Volunteer of the year named
DeKALB – Barb City Manor Inc., the governing board of Barb City Manor Retirement Home in DeKalb, recently hosted its annual Volunteer Thank You Dinner to honor all the members of FRIENDS of Barb City Manor. Members of the board served volunteers and their guests a dinner to show appreciation for the tireless efforts of FRIENDS on behalf of the residents.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2012 volunteer of the year award by board president Gary VanderMeer. This award was created in 1985 by the governing board to recognize FRIENDS members who have shown outstanding dedication and service.
Barb City Manor’s 2012 volunteer of the year is Ruby Griswold. She moved to the home in 2008 and became a member of FRIENDS in 2010. She volunteers in the gift shop on a weekly basis and frequently serves as a substitute. The ReSale Shop has benefited from her involvement. She has excellent customer service skills and pitches in whenever she sees a need.
Prior to retirement, Griswold worked in the business office of Sandwich Hospital. She and her husband, Morrie, were married for nearly 60 years and farmed in the Hinckley-Big Rock area. Together they served as custodians for their local churches. They had two sons together, Tom (Kathy) and Mark, and were blessed with a bright and talented granddaughter, Kristin.
Griswold loves to entertain and has always been an avid reader. She serves as an elections judge each Election Day and has been keeping herself out of trouble by sewing lapquilts for friends and charitable organizations. This fall, she agreed to serve as co-chair of the FRIENDS ReSale Shop.
