Schnucks customers hit by cyber attack

DeKALB – The DeKalb Schnucks is one of 79 stores in the grocery chain whose customers’ credit-card information might have been compromised in a cyber attack.

About 2.4 million people who used credit cards between Dec. 10 and March 31 were exposed to the attack that targeted credit-card numbers and expiration dates, but not the cardholders’ names, addresses or any other identifying information, the company said.

DeKalb Schnucks store manager Brian Lee said he had not heard from any reports of fraud from customers, but encouraged those concerned to contact the company’s hotline at 888-414-8022.

Schnucks corporate spokeswoman Lori Willis said the company contained the threat March 31, and the FBI and Secret Service are investigating. She said it is safe to use credit cards at the stores again.

Willis said it is important for anyone who used credit cards at the store during that time to monitor their account.

Even with the threat contained, Willis said stolen information could be used if the cardholder has not replaced the card.

Customers should also be aware of potential scams. She said there are reports of scammers claiming to be from Schnucks asking for personal information under the guise of investigating the incident. She said the company and financial institutions would never call to request that information.

People who have experienced fraudulent charges that were not reimbursed or paid card reissuing fees to their bank could receive reimbursement from Schnucks. Requests for reimbursement can be mailed to Schnuck Markets Inc., 11420 Lackland Road, St. Louis, MO 63146, Attention: Claims Department.
