Locals producing anti-bullying DVDs

SHABBONA – Pamela Rockwood is looking for actors, narrators and voice-over talent of all ages for an upcoming DVD series about bullying and suicide prevention in schools.

The superintendent of Indian Creek CUSD #425 was moved to action when she witnessed a bullying incident while on vacation two summers ago.

“Something needs to happen,” she said. “The word needs to get out.”

Although the subjects of bullying and suicide prevention are required in Illinois schools by the governor’s task force on bullying, Rockwood was not satisfied with the available classroom materials on the subjects. She decided to enlist the help of Emmy Award-winning producer Dave Barnes to produce her own series of DVDs with the goal of producing custom content for different age groups.

“The real key to what I wanted to do was to have DVD tracks that different groups could use,” Rockwood said. “I want to have a track that teachers can use with elementary school kids, middle school kids and high school kids, as well as adults.”

Production of the first three DVDs for use in DeKalb County schools has been funded by Resource Bank, and the fourth DVD about adult bullying in the workplace is funded through a grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

“I think that the community foundation immediately recognized the importance of Ms. Rockwood’s proposal,” said Becky Zantout, grants and community initiatives manager for foundation. “We knew right away when this application came in it was worth a good look from the foundation.”

Auditions will be held from 3:30 to 9 p.m. at Indian Creek High School library in Shabbona on Friday, April 19. Registration is recommended, but not required and if actors have head shots, resumes or reels, they are encouraged to bring them.

“If they show up before 9:00, they are assured of an audition even if we have to stay until midnight,” Rockwood said, adding that they will hold additional audition sessions if necessary.

Tentative filming dates are May 13-17.
