Voices only: DHS hosts a cappella semifinals

DeKALB – The DeKalb High School Music Department will host the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella Midwest Semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.

Varsity Vocals is the home of student a cappella with programs that give college and high school a cappella groups the opportunity to interact, compete, learn and perform in venues around the globe.

On Feb. 23, six Midwestern high school a cappella groups will compete for a spot at the ICHSA Finals in New York City in April. DeKalb High School’s mixed a cappella group Enharmonic Fusion will compete against Limited Edition (Port Washington High School, Port Washington, Wis.), Reign (West Des Moines Valley High School, West Des Moines, Iowa), Midnight Voices (West/Memorial High School, Madison, Wis.), High Fidelity (Niles West High School, Niles, Ill.) and Echo Effect (Niles West High School, Niles, Ill.).

Enharmonic Fusion is a mixed a cappella group formed in 2010 that has performed for many organizations and events in the community. Students in the group perform and arrange a wide variety of a cappella music. In 2012 Enharmonic Fusion received fourth place at the ICHSA Finals in New York City; the fourth consecutive year a DeKalb High School a cappella group competed in the national finals.

This year’s Enharmonic Fusion members include Ben Changnon, Amy Clark, Sam Click, Lauren Cliffe, Nelle Conley, Rachel Cloud, Melissa DeBall, Jon Doty, Will Ferguson, Tom Hagaman, Carlie Hayes, Jesse Heinsohn, Augi Jesmer, Sarah Jesmer, Emily Johnson, Olivia Johnson-Smith, Jake Maas, Avery Maxwell, Sandy Morales, Matt Petersen, Shelby Small, Evan Taylor, Jessica Wellman and Lauren Zelaya.
