Libraries add electricity kits

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Public Library will soon have electricity kits available for circulation. The three kits include an electronic snap circuit kit, a snap circuit battery eliminator and a snap circuit green alternative energy kit. The kits offer hands-on learning about electricity.

Patrons can explore the new kits at the Bright Futures Kickoff event at the library from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11. Bright Futures will offer interactive programs to help young learners explore careers and concepts in energy, electricity and electrical engineering. Libraries in DeKalb, Cortland and Hinckley are also participating in this collaborative program with Northern Illinois University STEM Outreach. The program is funded by the DeKalb County Community foundation.

At the kickoff event, Jeremy Benson of NIU STEM Outreach will demonstrate a Van de Graff generator, a Jacob’s ladder and “the electrified pickle.” The program is geared for learners in fourth through 12th grades; children in kindergarten through third grade are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
