CROP Walk totals announced
DeKALB – The total raised by the 2012 Sondra King Memorial CROP Hunger Walk was recently finalized. The Oct. 21 walk raised $32,036 to fight hunger locally and abroad.
This total exceeds the goal set for the walk by $400. Twenty-four local churches and organizations participated in the walk, and 43 walkers were recognized for raising more than $200 each.
Twenty-five percent of the total will be distributed to DeKalb County agencies including local food pantries, Meals on Wheels, Hope Haven and Safe Passage.
The remainder will be distributed to agencies working nationally and internationally to provide disaster relief and assist self-development projects.
One group of walkers in particular, the Catholic Independents, was easily recognized by their matching blue shirts saying, “Team Gingie.”
Team Gingie was named in honor of Gingie Noe, whose life was celebrated during the opening program. Noe was one of the early organizers of the DeKalb County CROP Hunger Walk and was active in starting the Northern Illinois University student chapter of Bread for the World, which also sent a team of walkers.
Enthusiastic Team Gingie not only raised the greatest amount of any participating organization, but inspired everyone at the walk by showing the difference an individual can make in a community and in the world.
The next Sondra King Memorial CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Oct. 20, 2013.
