Art league focuses on youth

DeKALB – The December meeting of the Kishwaukee Valley Art League will be the club’s annual “Art of Giving” program, highlighting six outstanding young artists in the DeKalb County area.  The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Unitarian Universalist church on the corner of North Fourth and Locust streets in DeKalb.

There will be one last chance at the meeting to purchase raffle tickets for the Gordon France watercolor of downtown DeKalb. The raffle winner will be drawn at the meeting.

The program will also collect donated art supplies suitable for children or seniors such as colored pencils, paints, brushes, art paper, canvas and canvas boards to be donated to the DeKalb County Nursing Home and other local service organizations.

The six students who will receive awards are Sarah Shilling of Earlville, Erin Vandenburg of Sycamore, Justene and Jaylene Jennings of DeKalb, Baily Hunt of Sycamore and Alexandra Johnson of Plano.

Students will show and in some cases demonstrate their particular arts. All six students are between 14 and 18 years old and have won visual arts awards through 4-H.

Sarah is a student at Aurora University. This year, she won awards for projects in ceramics and mixed media. Past projects have included drawing and painting.

Erin is a Sycamore High School junior who has done several photography projects though 4-H, and did an illustration project through a summer workshop at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is seriously considering an art career.

The Jennings sisters are repeat award winners. Both Justene and Jaylene were winners last year and showcased their work in stained glass at last year’s “Art of Giving” meeting.  Both are DeKalb High School students.

The Kishwaukee Valley Art League is a nonprofit organization that meets on the first Thursday of every month except January. Most meetings feature demonstrations of various art media by working artists. There is no membership obligation or admission to attend. After the month’s program, coffee and refreshments are served.
