Cadets help Scouts find their way
DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Army ROTC Huskie Battalion participated in a community outreach activity recently in St. Charles on Oct. 9.
Cub Scout Pack 801, known as “The Wolves,” invited the cadets to teach Scouts basic land navigation skills. A small group of senior cadets met with 11 Cub Scouts and their fathers.
The cadets taught the Scouts such skills as reading a map, learning the different symbols and colors of a map and the different components of a compass.
After learning the basics of using a compass, the scouts navigated a course in which they were given a direction and a distance and navigated to each point under the watchful eyes of Cadets Alex Noll, Wesley Andrewski, Taylor Hartsough and Edward Tolle. The fathers of the Scouts and the Scout leaders took part in the training side-by-side with the Scouts. The Scouts all had fun and were very grateful to the cadets.
