Students go hungry for the homeless

DeKALB – Sponsors are being sought for a Fast-A-Thon at Northern Illinois University, to benefit Hope Haven homeless shelter in DeKalb.

Fast-A-Thon is a collaboration of the office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development and the Muslim Students Association of NIU. The Fast-A-Thon is part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, Nov. 12-16.

Students will sign a pledge to not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset – about 5:08 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. – on Nov. 15. The intention is for students to get an idea of how hunger may feel. A meal will be provided for students at sunset. For each student that pledges, businesses and organizations are asked to donate. For example, if 65 students pledge, a business can choose to donate $1 for each student, donating $65 at the end. The donation per student can range from 50 cents to $10. Sponsors may also cap the number of students they will sponsor. All donations will benefit our local Hope Haven.
