DeKALB – In 2006 the Oak Crest Employee scholarship program began with a generous gift from the estate of Jack Boyle. Boyle, a former Oak Crest resident and supporter of the Oak Crest community, saw an opportunity to create a legacy for future generations. The legacy took the form of an employee scholarship that would assist in defraying the costs of tuition, fees and textbooks for employees and their dependents. The scholarship was established to encourage and assist employees and their dependents in the pursuit of an undergraduate degree or equivalent program of study.
To be eligible, employees must have worked at least 1,000 hours in each of the last two years. Applicants must demonstrate acceptance into an accredited undergraduate college or program of study prior to final approval. This year, a total of $10,500 is being awarded to three deserving students.
Crystal Dalaguete, niece of food service employee Lorli MaNamara, received a $5,000 scholarship. Dalaguete is studying nursing at Kishwaukee College. She is an active member of several service clubs and volunteers for a number of service organizations. She is a frequent volunteer at Oak Crest during Open Talent Nights, coordinates a group of students who give dance performances and assists with a number of evening activity programs. In her application essay, Dalaguete said, “This scholarship will provide me with the peace of mind and security to follow my dreams.”
Salvador Macias received a $2,000 award. Macias, a senior at Northern Illinois University, is studying Spanish and literature, with minor studies in Italian and foreign language development. He has worked in the food service department at Oak Crest since 2006. Macias is actively involved in the Intercultural Student Association and has worked as a volunteer at both NIU and for local organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and Hope Haven. He has also volunteered his time and talents at Oak Crest by participating in the Open Mic programs and as part of a dance presentation group. In his application, he said, “I want to be of assistance for the non-English speakers to promote effective communication and help create a more productive work force.”
Paige Lehman, a food service employee since 2009, was awarded $3,500. She is studying marketing at NIU. She is an active volunteer in her church and the community at large. Her career goal is to work as a stylist or merchandise buyer. Her creativity will help her future employers take their fashion merchandising to the next level.
