Special Olympians place in tournament
SYCAMORE – Athletes and teams from Opportunity House earned accolades at the Special Olympics Illinois Outdoor Sports Festival in Decatur. More than 600 athletes competed in the two-day golf and softball tournament.
To compete, athletes must have had at least eight weeks of training and have qualified through area events. Divisions are based on age and skill level.
In the 9-hole golf competition, Andrew Whitwell of Hampshire placed first and Sarah Carlson of Sycamore placed third.
In the softball team competition, the Opportunity House Heat placed first and Lightning placed third.
Heat players are Kevin Banks, Will Davis, Brendan Morrissey, Matthew Sherman, Frank Slowinski, Frank “Danny” Trevino and Cody Zimmer of Sycamore, Robert Grey of Leland, Kevin Koch and Joshua Waffle of DeKalb and Edward Varcovich of Cortland.
Lightning players are Daniel Barnes of Maple Park, Sheila Buchholz, Mark Clausen, Alvin Haynie, Lance Howard, Matthew Marler, Jason Meyers, David Nerge, Jason Thompson, Craig Titus and Christian Zeller of DeKalb, Ronald Hendle, Timothy Sitowski, Monica Waller and Brianne Mays of Sycamore and Rick White of Kingston.
