Gospel quartet to give free concert
SYCAMORE – The Blackwood Brothers Quartet, world-famous gospel singers, will perform at Sycamore United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4. The concert is free and open to the public. An offering will be taken for the group.
The Blackwood Brothers started in 1934 with members James, Doyle, Roy and R.W. Blackwood. The current group consists of James’s sons Jimmy, lead vocal, and Billy, baritone, with tenor Wayne Little and bass Butch Ownens.
Many greats in gospel music came through the Blackwood organization. For nearly seven decades, James Blackwood formed the enduring nucleus of the group. His death in 2002 ended an era in gospel music.
The Blackwood Brothers has won eight Grammies and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Sycamore United Methodist is located at 160 Johnson Ave. in Sycamore. The concert will be preceded by a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the church youth at 5:30 p.m. The concert is part of the continuing Jessie Viner concert series.
