DeKALB – The Penguin Project invites the community to “be our guest” at the upcoming performance of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.,” Sept. 13-16 at DeKalb High School.
This marks the third production by CCT’s Penguin Project, a program that provides children and young adults with special needs the opportunity to take center stage in Broadway-style musical performances.
The cast of 35 has been rehearsing the show since May, with each individual assisted by a non-disabled peer.
The artist-mentor teams have worked side-by-side all summer learning the songs and dances that made “Beauty and the Beast” such a huge hit, including “Gaston,” “Be Our Guest” and “Kill the Beast.”
“It has been a magical process watching our artists grow into their roles, but also to observe how the mentors have grown and learned,” CCT Penguin Project coordinator Joe King said. “In many ways it is a reflection of the central theme of the show. Just as Belle learns to know and love the person trapped within the Beast, our mentors have learned to look beyond the disabilities of our artists and instead appreciate their amazing talents.”
The show, directed by Tracey Busby and her assistants, Julie Breidenbach and Kristi Bork, will feature lavish costumes and professional lighting and music.
Tickets are available from cast members, online at cctonstage.com or by telephone at 815-200-4747.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Children younger than 2 are admitted free. Sign language interpretation will be available at the Friday, Sept. 14 show.
The Penguin Project program is made possible in part through the generous support of The Doug and Lynn Roberts Family Foundation and the DeKalb County Community Mental Health Board.
