Airport hosts fly-in
HINCKLEY — There’s a place where anyone who enjoys the world of flight and the allure of airplanes is welcome. It’s the local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the world’s leading organization in providing opportunities to participate in aviation.
EAA Chapter 241 meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport main terminal hangar, east. Refreshments are served at 6:30 p.m. Everyone with an aviation interest, pilots and nonpilots alike, are invited to attend.
“EAA Chapters are the local aviation families throughout the nation,” said Rose Ellen May, chapter secretary. “We welcome anyone who sees something special every time an airplane flies overhead and wants to meet others who share that enthusiasm for the unique experience of flight.”
The chapter’s events season will wind down Sunday, Sept. 16, with the Hinckley Fall Fly-In. This fly-in, drive-in breakfast celebrates aviation’s roots. The Hinckley airport’s turf runway is perfect for landing and viewing classic planes. More than 75 planes arrived for the breakfast last year, including Piper Cubs, warbird Texan T-6 planes and amateur-built aircraft like the Wheeler Express.
Those who don’t fly are still welcome. The fly-in is open to the public, pilots and nonpilots alike.
For $6, attendees can get a breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs cooked to order. All proceeds support the chapter’s Young Eagle rallies and annual scholarship.
Local EAA chapters are found all around the world. Members meet monthly and plan activities like fly-ins and airport open houses to share aviation with the community. Other EAA projects include Young Eagles rallies, which gives children the chance to learn about flight from experienced pilots, aircraft building projects and work parties to maintain local flight facilities. Most EAA members are pilots, but non-flying aviation enthusiasts are always welcome.
