Farmers markets head into home stretch

DeKALB – It has been a year of highs, lows and new beginnings for the vendors at the DeKalb Farmers Market, held each Thursday during the summer months at Van Buer Plaza in DeKalb.

“I lost a lot of my flower plants,” said Chrissy Scarley of Earlville, owner of Catalpa Chrissy’s farm stand. She also lost all of the crops from her apple and apricot trees.

“That first frost in April just annihilated us,” she said. Fortunately, she still produced enough decorative flowers, tomatoes and peppers to sell at her stand each week.
