Caregivers can drum out stress

DeKalb County Hospice is offering a new eight-week caregiver support group utilizing therapeutic drumming. The group is for caregivers providing or overseeing the care of a loved one.

Caregiving can be difficult and is often accompanied by wide-ranging emotions of hope, fatigue and frustration. Drumming is an ancient approach to healing which is now getting a lot of attention by researchers. Biological signs of relaxation can be seen after only four minutes of group drumming, and it has been found to reduce stress, improve mood and boost the immune system.

The drumming group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday evenings from Sept. 10 to Oct. 29 at DeKalb County Hospice. There is no charge for participation, and instruments are provided.
