1,200-plus kids get free backpacks

DeKALB – The Salvation Army of DeKalb County distributed 1,250 backpacks of school supplies last week to help children in need get the school year off to a good start.

Last year, only 550 children were registered for supplies, social services director Jennifer Warren said. This year, 1,250 were registered, and Warren said she feels blessed the agency had enough supplies to go around.

Donors also came out of the woodwork after a story about the first round of the distribution appeared in the Daily Chronicle, Warren said.
