Young golfers advance in skills challenge

DeKALB – Local junior golfers visited the Buena Vista golf course in DeKalb on Saturday, July 28, to compete in the Ryder Cup Youth Skills Challenge.

Organized by the Illinois PGA, the Ryder Cup is a free summer-long competition that showcases the driving, chipping and putting skills of junior golfers ages 6 to 17. Competition included long drive within a 30-yard grid, a touch chipping/closest to the pin contest and a 15-foot and 25-foot putting contest.

Winners were Joshua Pehl of Sugar Grove (boys 6-8); Malarie O’Sullivan of Sycamore (girls 6-8); Lucas Watson of Galesburg (boys 9-11); Gwyn Golembiewski of DeKalb (girls 9-11); Colton Guy of Cortland (boys 12-14); Maggie Russell of DeKalb (girls 12-14); Jonathon Foy of Oswego (boys 15-17); and Dominique Lee of Sugar Grove (girls 15-17).
