Garage sale will raise money to build homesBy DENNIS HINES Area residents will have an opportunity to purchase some items, while helping other residents obtain affordable housing. Officials from the DeKalb County chapter of Habitat for Humanity is set to host their annual garage sale this weekend. The garage sale will be held in the Lowe's Home Improvement parking lot on Sycamore Road. The garage sale will include a silent auction for a car. Residents will have an opportunity to bid on the car from 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22 to noon Sunday, Aug. 24. There also will be raffle drawings for various prizes, including a $100 gas card, golf passes, a $50 Borders gift card, a Gevalia coffee maker and a $25 Target gift card. Residents may donate items for the garage sale from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 and 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 22 and Aug. 23. Some of the items that have been donated during previous years include furniture, clothing, tools and toys. “Some of the items we don't ask for are appliances and paint,” said Chris Peddle, administrative assistant for DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity. “If they don't sell, they are very difficult and expensive for us to get rid of.” Proceeds from the garage sale will be used to purchase land and materials to construct new homes. DeKalb County Habitat for Humanity volunteers have been constructing homes for residents in need for about 10 years. “This weekend, we will be building our ninth home,” Peddle said. “Next year, we hope to build are 10th and 11th homes.” In order to become a client for Habitat for Humanity, residents must meet certain income guidelines. Clients also must spend at least 250 hours helping the Habitat for Humanity volunteers construct the home. Peddle said Habitat for Humanity also advise clients on how to manage their money to pay for additional expenses. "We tell them how they can take care of their money, so they can manage their home," Peddle said. "They learn how to finance their money. They also learn how to be good neighbors. We guide them through that process."
