All veterans, and everyone else, are invited to the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission's fifth annual Employment, Health and Benefit Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Kishwaukee College Conference Center in Malta.
You don’t need a reservation. Just come on over and help yourself to free coffee and snacks, while also addressing issues of concern with members of the commission.
While aimed at the veteran, the event is open to the public and admission is free. NIU Police Chief Don Grady, who spent time in Iraq helping to develop a police force there, will be a guest speaker.
The fair will also include employment seminars, with help available in skill development, interviewing techniques and writing a resume.
Those interested in truck driving can also learn how to train to get a Commercial Driver's License.
There will be specific information on illnesses that afflict many veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and other conflicts too, including information on traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.
For those interested in history, there will also be memorabilia from the Civil War and WW II.
The commission has a dedicated staff that was developed after a majority of DeKalb County voters supported a tax increase to create the commission. Whatever your needs are, the Vets’ Commission can refer you to the right people or the right resources.
For more information about the fair, call 815.756-8129, or send an email to DCVAC @ dekalbcounty.org. The Superintendent is Herb Holderman, and the chairman of the event is John Duback, 815-993-3956
The commission office is located in the DeKalb County Health Department at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road.
