The MidWeek
The MidWeek is a part of Northern Illinois Publishing, which is a division of Shaw Newspapers, Inc. Shaw, Inc is the sixth owner of the weekly newspaper. The MidWeek is in its 41st year in 2008.
Although it began as an advertising "shopper," originally called the Citizen Shopping News, The MidWeek has been a full-fledged newspaper since 1979. It is a free newspaper, delivered to 31,000 homes throughout DeKalb County, each Wednesday by carrier and the U.S. Mail. There also are newsstand distribution points at area businesses and on the NIU and Kishwaukee College campuses.
The MidWeek offers a full range of news and advertising features, with an emphasis on only local news. In April, 1996, major changes were made in the look of the paper from 5-column to 6-column format, updating typography and expanding news offerings. Since just 1992, The MidWeek has earned 100 awards at the national, state and regional levels, with many won prior to that. Awards are for editorial and advertising excellence and speak highly about the quality of staff members here and the work that is done. In Fall 1995, The MidWeek earned Second Place for General Excellence in the Independent Free Papers of America making it the #2 paper in North America (for papers with more than 25% news content). The MidWeek also was named the 1994 Business of the Year by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce. Currently, the paper has two full-time staff writers and managing editor Hank Brockett rounding out the news staff. For more information on our staff, please see the staff listing. The MidWeek is known as DeKalb County's most respected newspaper and continues to provide local, community news and advertising to its readership.
